What Is No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu? A Beginner’s Guide
By 10th Planet Orange Park
If you’ve been researching martial arts, you’ve probably come across the term “No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu” — and you might be wondering what exactly it means, how it’s different from regular BJJ, and whether it’s right for you.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Gi vs. No-Gi: What’s the Difference?
Traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is practiced wearing a gi — a heavy cotton uniform (similar to a karate uniform) that includes a jacket, pants, and a belt. The gi allows for techniques that involve gripping the collar, sleeves, and lapels.
No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu strips all of that away. You train in athletic shorts (or spats) and a rash guard. Without the gi, the pace is faster, the transitions are quicker, and the techniques more closely resemble what you’d encounter in a real self-defense situation — because real confrontations don’t come with handles to grab.
What Is the 10th Planet System?
The 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu system was founded by Eddie Bravo, one of the most innovative grapplers in the sport’s history. The system is built around a philosophy of constant evolution and creativity — with signature positions like the Rubber Guard, Lockdown, Truck, and Twister that have revolutionized the grappling world.
At 10th Planet Orange Park, we teach this system under the guidance of Coach Storm Shannon, a certified Eddie Bravo Black Belt.
What to Expect in Your First No-Gi Class
Walking into your first class can feel intimidating, but here’s what actually happens:
- Warm-up — Movement drills, stretching, and light conditioning
- Technique instruction — The coach demonstrates 2-3 techniques, then you drill them with a partner
- Positional sparring — Controlled practice from specific positions
- Live rolling (optional) — Full sparring at the end of class, always optional for beginners
You don’t need to be in shape, flexible, or experienced. You just need to show up.
