Muay Thai vs. Kickboxing: What’s the Difference?

By 10th Planet Orange Park

Muay Thai striking training at 10th Planet Orange Park

If you’re looking for a striking martial art in the Orange Park or Jacksonville area, you’ve probably seen both “Muay Thai” and “kickboxing” on gym schedules. They look similar from the outside — but the differences matter. Here’s what you need to know.

The Basics

Kickboxing typically refers to styles that use punches and kicks — four points of contact. Depending on the ruleset, knees may be limited or prohibited, and clinch work is usually broken up quickly.

Muay Thai is known as the “Art of Eight Limbs” because it uses eight points of contact: punches, kicks, elbows, and knees. The clinch — standing grappling where you control your opponent’s head and body — is a central part of the art, not something to be avoided.

Which One Is Better for Self-Defense?

Muay Thai’s use of all eight limbs — especially elbows, knees, and clinch work — makes it more versatile for real-world self-defense. When a confrontation closes to close range, elbows and knees become your most effective weapons. Kickboxing doesn’t train those tools.

Which One Should You Try?

If you want the most complete striking system — the one that trains you for every range of stand-up combat — Muay Thai is the answer. At 10th Planet Orange Park, our program is led by Kru Big Will, a certified Kru with 25 years of striking experience and the creator of the Lethal Limbs system.
